I needed a temporary valance in my mudroom since the existing one didn’t go with the rugs I had to purchase for my dog. We had to get runners for the mud room and kitchen because our dog Finnegan was slipping and falling all of the time. The new rugs, which would also be temporary, are grey with a busy pattern. I needed something simple for the window valance. Since it was all temporary, I wanted to be thrifty. I picked up a cotton print shower curtain at Home Goods for only $14.99. What is great is that it’s is well over 2 yards of material at 72″ x 72″, and fully finished around the edges.
The other great trick I employed was to use the shower curtain “as is”. This way, if I didn’t like it, I could easily take it back. I decided to make a simple mock balloon shade valance. Here is how I did it with no measuring, no cutting, no sewing, gluing or stapling!
- Fold Fabric Edges in to the Size of your Rod
Make sure the fabric folds are about even.
2. Fold the Fabric in Half Lengthwise
Your fold is where the drapery rod rests. Mine is a tension rod because it sits between my mudroom cabinets.
3. Fan-Fold the Bottom Edges to Desired Drop Length
You can play around with this to see how long you want it to hang down into your window. Then use ribbon or cording about 6″ in from the edges and tie it in place.
Hang the Rod at the Window, Voila!
I chose to hide the tied trim on the back side.
