Decorating Bathroom Windows

Decorating bathroom windows can be awkward. Often times in older homes the bathrooms can have funny little windows you are not sure what to do with. On the flip side, in new construction, you might find large modern bathrooms with beautiful over sized windows. The problem there being a close neighbor who shares the view! There are a few thing you have to consider as you explore your options. The most important, because it is your bathroom, is privacy. The next is durability, because the bath can impose conditions of heat and high moisture, which will effect the construction materials of window coverings.

At the onset you need to assess whether or not to do anything to the windows at all. If you have privacy and an architecturally pleasing window, you may choose to leave it alone. I always prefer doing something to a window, even if it’s a minor touch of fabric with a cornice or valance. Another idea is to simply paint the the molding so the frame contrasts from the wall in an interesting way.

If you do need privacy, I love the use of vinyl or faux wood blinds. Blinds give you light and privacy control and you do not have to lift them up to view the outdoors, as you would with shades. The great thing is that they come in a wide variety of finishes, from the painted look in various shades of white, to stained wood styles in a variety of natural and rich wood tones. I prefer the large 2″ slat because for it’s a high-end look, similar to shutters. If the style is appropriate and your budget isn’t tight, then faux wood shutters are a wonderful choice.

Sometimes you need to get creative, as I did with my own bathroom dilemma. I have one small rectangular window which posed no problem, but on the adjacent wall I have a large circular window that I love. My husband insisted we needed privacy but I did not want to cover it up. I considered specialty custom shutters but that would be extremely costly and very heavy looking. I thought about applying semi-opaque window film over the glass, but the fact I wouldn’t be able to have a clear view to the outside if I wanted really bothered me. Then it dawned on me, crystal bead curtain drape. It would provide a light and airy look with sparkle. Also it provides enough privacy while allowing a clear view if desired. Take a look above.
