Tips for Proper Furniture Spacing

There are a few helpful rules when it comes to furniture placement and spacing. You want to create a feeling of coherence in a room but it is important not to overcrowd pieces. The flow of a room is critical for creating comfort as well as good aesthetics. Here are a few key tips to follow as you plan your furniture layout.

There should be a minimum of 2 1/2 feet of space between the couch and other pieces… Read more »

Finding Inspiration to Redecorate

We decided to redecorate our family room. Besides the kitchen, it’s the room we spend the most time in. I wanted to get a new vibe. I thought, what look do I love the most? It made me think about the fact that I love and appreciate commercial décor. When I walk into a hotel for the first time, I look all around and take it all in, the colors, textures, art and furnishings. High-end… Read more »

Quick and Thrifty Fabric Valance

I needed a temporary valance in my mudroom since the existing one didn’t go with the rugs I had to purchase for my dog. We had to get runners for the mud room and kitchen because our dog Finnegan was slipping and falling all of the time. The new rugs, which would also be temporary, are grey with a busy pattern. I needed something simple for the window valance. Since it was all temporary, I… Read more »

A Custom Look Valance, No Sewing!

I love simple projects and wanted to share this DIY window treatment with you. I made a quick no sew valance from a piece of left over material we had from our Deco Wrap cornice samples. It was one yard of 54″ wide home decorators fabric and the selvedge ends were trimmed off. To figure out how much fabric you need, determine the window width you need to cover and add 12″. My width was… Read more »

A Cozier Mud Room

Our mud room window was left plain and looked neglected. It is tucked between two large cabinets which is where we keep our jackets and way too many other things! In looking at it the other day, I realized the space could use a little something to make it cozier. A Deco Wrap cornice valance would do the trick.

To be frugal, I took a cornice style from our collection of QVC samples…. Read more »

Decorating with Throw Pillows

Decorating with pillows is one of my favorite things. I love pillows and could shop for them all day long. Adding the final touches to a room is so important, and one of the best ways to convey the character of a room is with this fun, plush accessory. Pillows can be whimsical, add a pop of color, texture, or harmonize an entire room. And because they are relatively inexpensive, you can use pillows to… Read more »

Tips for Using Area Rugs

An area rug is a very important unifying element in a room scheme. It can pull a room together, or if not chosen correctly, it can disrupt an otherwise harmonious design plan. The most important purpose of an area rug is that it should anchor the furniture. Aside from the aesthetics, there were some questions I had on the rules of rug placement. From reading various articles on the matter, here are a… Read more »

Tips for Choosing Sheer Window Treatments

I love simple sheer panels for window treatments. That is because today’s sheers are not like the sheers of old. Years ago you would mostly find plain voile or polyester fabric, and sheers were commonly used as a layering element underneath lined fabric panels. As a traditional window covering, you had the option to have everything pulled back to reveal the windows, sheers closed with panels decoratively framing the window, or both panels and… Read more »

Sprucing Up Spring Décor

With the spring finally here and summer soon approaching,  I like to plan on making some changes to my décor to go along with the warmer weather. Here are some refreshing spring decorating ideas that can spruce up your look and brighten your mood.

Take down those heavy drapes and let the light brighten up your room. Instead, use pretty sheer panels. They can still give some privacy while letting light filter through. It’s… Read more »

The Drapery “Puddle”

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the term “puddling” in drapery lingo. It’s a funny term but it is a feature to be decided upon when getting custom drapery for your windows. Puddling is the result of the excess fabric length when lies on the floor. I ran across this question recently and I thought about what I would advise if I were consulting today.

When I last… Read more »
